Tips for a smooth move

3 MIN READ October 30, 2018
Moving house is an exciting and busy time, but it can also be a logistical nightmare if you’re not prepared. We’ve put together some great tips and important things to remember so that when you make your next move, it’ll be smooth sailing all the…

The earlier you start packing, the better
Packing always takes much longer than you’d expect – even the smallest spaces can accumulate a surprising amount over time. If you work on your packing a little bit each day leading up to the move, the less you’ll have to do and the less stress you’ll have to deal with on the day. Start with rooms or cupboards you don’t use often and work your way through. Make sure to label each box clearly so that you can find things easily.

Declutter, declutter, declutter
It can’t be stressed enough – decluttering is the key to a successful move, but as with packing, it needs to be started early. Although you might not be able to bear the thought of parting with certain objects, you have to be practical. If they will just be stuffed away in a cupboard or a drawer in your new home too, then you really don’t need to bring them with you.

Map out your new space
This might actually be quite fun for those budding interior decorators out there. Take a whole lot of measurements in your new house and map out where each of the furniture items you’re taking with you will be placed. Not only does this give you a better idea of how your new space will look, it also eliminates the stress of shuffling heavy furniture back and forth until you decide where it should go.

Disconnect and redirect
In the flurry of excitement and moving logistics, it can be easy to forget the simple things, like sorting out the redirection of your mail. Make sure you’ve got your power, internet and pay TV disconnected and ready to be set up in your new home so it’s all ready to go when you move in. It might seem romantic to sit on the floor and eat a takeaway pizza in the dark, but this will get old very quickly!

Notify your change of address
As with the above, it can be easy to forget to notify the important companies or authorities about your change of address. Make sure that you let your insurance company, your bank, your credit card company, and your electoral registrar know that you have changed your address. It’s also a good idea to make a list of any newspaper or magazine subscriptions you have and change those too.

Keep your valuables with you
As you can imagine, things can get swept up and into boxes or the dustbin very easily when moving house. Have a certain box or folder that has all of your important documents in it and make sure you keep this with you at all times – even if it’s sitting on your lap in the car on the way to your new home. This should have any passports, birth certificates, and other important documents. You could also purchase a fire safe box to keep these in – it will come in handy in the event of an emergency too.
